for Mrs. Jensen’s Class

Reading MCA Tests:

 Thursday & Friday April 24th and 25th

Math MCA Tests:

Thursday & Friday, May 1st and 2nd

It is important for your child to understand the significance of doing his/her best work on these tests.  These are things you can have your child do to help prepare for test days:

Get 8 or more hours of sleep.

Eat a healthy breakfast (at home or at school).

                               Get to school on time.

We want all kids to feel they can be successful.  Please be supportive and positive with your child as they head out the door on the mornings of testing.

Encourage them to take their time on the tests.

MCA tests can be stressful for students, and our goal is to ease any anxiety they have about the tests while encouraging them to put forth their best effort.

Updates for April

MCAs-Slight Change in Dates

In the March newsletter, I had included the dates the students would be taking The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs).  There has been a slight change in the dates.  Our class is scheduled to take the reading assessment on April 24 and 25. The math assessment will be taken on May 1 and 2.  The tests will be given in the morning on those dates. Please try to avoid scheduling appointments for your child on those days so they can be at school for the tests.

Math

The students have been working on:

§  Fractions
§  Solving word problems
§  Changing fractions to decimals and percents
§  Area
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be working on:
§  Translation, rotation, and reflection of shapes
§  Reviewing fourth grade math skills to prepare for MCAs

Reading
This week the students have been working on identifying the author’s purpose.  The students have been focusing on the main purposes for writing or reading which are to persuade, to inform, or to entertain. Next week we will be working on identifying fact and opinion in information we read.

In our writing curriculum students are completing informational reports. Each student chose a state to research.  They have used World Book Online and books they checked out from the library to complete their research.  Be looking for these to come home.
